Wilbur “Dude” Oakes, age 91, passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at Somerset Nursing and Rehab. He was born on September 21, 1926 in Russell County to the late Offie and Susie Gadberry Oakes.
Wilbur was a farmer and enjoyed every minute of his many years on his farm in Naomi, KY where he ran a dairy for over 30 years and was involved with many other farm related activities. He was saved and baptized at a young age and was a life-long member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Wilbur was a friend to many and would do whatever he could to help others.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Novia Muse Oakes, to whom he was married on May 3, 1947; his children, Velda (and Steve) Barlow of Somerset; James Oakes (Lisa Norfleet) of Nancy and Rodney (and Christy) Oakes of Somerset; six grandchildren, Denton Lee II (and Paulette) Oakes of Somerset, Emily (and Brandon) Sizemore of Lexington, Brady (and Megan) Barlow of Lexington, Meredith, Grant and Caroline Oakes of Somerset; six great-grandchildren, Victoria, Lilly, Clara, Evy, Sadie and Phoebe; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Oakes of Somerset; one brother, Robert “Pod” Oakes; and one sister, Bernice Anderson both of Cincinnati.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Denton Lee Oakes, who passed away on December 29, 2011; four siblings, Wilmerth Oakes, Adele Begley, Jewell (Robert) Gibson and Roscoe Oakes.
Wilbur proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946 as Seaman First Class. He was present to witness the signing of the Peace Treaty ending WWII, September 2, 1945, in which General Douglas MacArthur and Admiral Chester Nimitz signed on behalf of the United States on the deck of the USS Missouri, in Tokyo Bay.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Gideon Bible Memorial Fund or to Bethlehem Baptist Church in Naomi, KY.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 after 5:00pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.
His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 1:00pm at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Altman and Pastor Steve Lesher officiating. Burial will be at Mill Springs National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rodney Oakes, James Oakes, Denton Oakes II, Steve Barlow, Brady Barlow and Grant Oakes. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard.
