Vertis Tarter, age 78, of Somerset, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Jean Waddle Hospice Care Center surrounded by his family.

Vertis was born on January 2, 1940 in Naomi, KY to the late Hulen Tarter and Frances Waldrip Tarter.  He was a member of Naomi Nazarene Church.  Vertis worked as a Butcher at Turpen’s Slaughter House. He enjoyed fishing, going to yard sales and running around with his friends.

He is survived by three daughters, Debra New of Somerset, Sheila (and Dannie) Cain of Science Hill and Melissa (and Tom) Abbott of Somerset; one sister, Nelva (and Thomas) Young of Nancy; seven grandchildren, Jason (and Rachel) Cain, Jarrod New, Misty (and Andrew) Robbins, Courtney (and Brandon) Gumm, Kaitlin Abbott, Amy (and Jason) Bland and Adam New; five great-grandchildren, Kaiden Abbott, Hunter and Tyler Cain, and Jody and Taylor Bland; and one great-great grandchild, Reagan Crouch.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Irene Tarter, whom he married on October 18, 1960 in Pulaski County and she preceded him on March 3, 1998; one son, Vertis “Harold” Tarter in 1987; one son-in-law, Randall New; and one infant brother, Jay Dean Tarter.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at 10:00am at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Brian Fudge and Bro. Joe Young officiating.  Burial will be at Tarter Cemetery.   Pallbearers will be Jason Cain, Adam New, Andrew Robbins, Brandon Gumm, Dustin Murphy and Roger Burton.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the Tarter Cemetery Fund.
