Edwin Thomas “Tommy” Dykes, age 85, of Somerset, KY, passed away on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at his residence.
Tommy was born in Somerset, KY on September 24, 1932, son of the late Fred and Charlotte Gragg Dykes.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Edna Silver Dykes; his wife of 19 years, Helen Marie Haynes; one brother, Fred D. Sonny Dykes Jr.; two sisters, Joyce Annette Black and Mary Jo Whitaker; one nephew, Edwin D. Dykes; and a brother-in-law, Edison Black.
He is survived by three sons, Ronald W. Dykes, Kenneth (and Carol) Dykes and William (and Carolyn) Dykes; two brothers, Roger (and Peggy) Dykes and Richard (and Debbie) Dykes; one sister, Barbara Darlene (and David) Cooper; one sister-in-law, Juanita Dykes Garner; one brother-in-law, Marvin Whitaker; dear friend, Frances Whitaker; six grandchildren, Heather Dykes, Keith (and Tana) Dykes, Sandra (and Tim) Withem, Anne Dykes, Josh Dykes and Matthew Dykes; five great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Harley, Kristina, Drew and Austin; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Tommy enlisted into the military at the age of 17. He served his country with honor and distinction as a Sergeant of the Second Infantry Division in the Korean War, receiving numerous medals including the Purple Heart. He retired from General Electric in Cincinnati, Ohio where he was a machinist for 30 years. He was a member of Southside Church of God of Prophecy and volunteered as a Sunday School teacher in his early years. He was a devoted Christian follower who loved studying the Bible and attending church. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, golfing, family cookouts, watching University of Kentucky basketball and working on his farm. Tommy was known to all as someone willing to help a friend or family member in need, always generous with his time and resources.
Visitation will be on Monday, June 25, 2018 from 11:00am until 2:00pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.
A Memorial service will follow at 2:00pm at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Richard Ramsey and Bro. Roger Dykes officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Silvers Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made in Tommy’s memory to the Silvers Cemetery Fund, 1085 Thurman Rd., Somerset, KY 42503.
