James Wilson “Jim” Bowles, age 75, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, May 12, 2018.

James was born on November 18, 1942 in Laurel County, KY.  He was the son of the late James Minter Bowles and Lucille Moren Bowles Eversole.  He graduated from London City School and later Eastern Kentucky University in 1963.  After graduation, he worked for the State of Kentucky as a City Planner, taught Geography at Somerset Community College and retired from South Kentucky RECC after thirty one years, as the Economic Development Specialist.

He was married to Lillian Marie Cobb Bowles on August 19, 1963.  To this union he was blessed with two daughters that he cherished, adored and had a special bond with; Gina Renae Bowles (and Robert) Sears and Jamie Maria Bowles (and Greg) Smith, both of Somerset, KY.  His grandchildren, Cole Smith, Kasey Smith, Katelyn Smith and Nathanael Sears were one of his greatest joys and he loved spending time with them and attending everything they were involved in.  “Pappy” was very proud of each of them.  Also surviving is one aunt, Carolyn Bowles of Richmond, KY.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Minter Bowles and Lucille Moren Bowles Eversole; and his step-father, Glen Eversole.

James was a member of First Baptist Church of Somerset, having served twenty three years as Head Usher as well as other church committees.  He taught Sunday school for many years prior at First United Methodist Church, Somerset, KY.  He was a man of great wit and wisdom.  His humor was unique and he left us with many wonderful memories and stories.  He mastered the greatest gift of being a Christian man and mentor, loving and supporting his family and leading by example.  James was an avid gun and knife enthusiast and was a member of the NRA.  He enjoyed creating, trading, working on and talking about his gun and knife collections with his family and friends.  James held a special gift of making people feel important and loved by remembering their names.  Besides the Bible, the dictionary was his favorite book, where he taught himself new words on a daily basis.

Visitation will be on Thursday, May 24, 2018 from 5:00pm until 9:00pm at First Baptist Church of Somerset.  The church will also be open at 8:00am Friday morning, with a second visitation from 10:00am until 11:00am, prior to the funeral.
